Also: Is anyone else amazed at the sheer number of products (many
similar) in this category? Does it mean everyone is desperate to get
organized, or fears engulfment by the ever-expanding oceans of
information we’re forced to deal with?

Maybe its the only category of basic productivity application without a prevailing standard solution. Word processor, internet client, email client, spread sheet, data base, outliner, and “notebook.” Those are the basic productivity categories I think of. Word, IE, Outlook/OE, Excel, Filemaker (?), Word, and . . . nothing.
All except one of the above are MS applications, and I don’t know whether it really is a genuine exception, not having followed Access.
Microsoft only in the last year entered this area with OneNote. It has been well-received, but I don’t know how broadly. The only commercial book dealing with it isn’t available from the LA Borders, so it seems to have a narrow base yet.
