I won’t argue with your facts, but all I can tell you is that most of the people I know who like to outline stay away from the Word outliner like it’s carrying the black death. I’ve tried using it and find it a very frustrating experience… not exactly an environment conducive to the writing process. I can’t rule out that this is due to my own shortcomings, but the whole point of software is to enable your work, not create obstacles to it.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not arguing that NoteMap is a great program. I just think it is the single-document outliner closest in functionality to GrandView. That doesn’t mean it is close. Obviously, people work differently, have different tolerances for the hoops their applications make them jump through. When I am writing, I don’t even want to have to think about the app.
As for formatting in NoteMap, I don’t care about formatting when I’m outlining… that comes later, after the writing is done. I do care somewhat about formatting text in my database, because that can help me highlight key text within an article… but that’s another story.
