Zoot can do this fairly easily from within a single database. You create a smart folder—that’s a folder with a rule such as pull in all items that contain the word “oak”—then add an action to this folder which assigns “tree” as a category. You can create many rules for the same folder, so you can also add items with the words “birch”, “elm”, and “pine.” I’m unsure if you can perform these actions across databases. I don’t think so, but every time I think I’ve found a limitation to Zoot, I learn that I’m wrong. Zoot is incredibly versatile. And the author has finally released the official version… I think it has been in “preview” for four years! But the lack of text formatting of any kind is a severe limitation. The author has promised this feature one day… but I’m not holding my breath.
