Originally, this was a question, and I stumbled across my answer today. It was about rules, and I maintain that rules are the coolest things! However the way it looks to me now, any styles you've applied to the text override a rule. So, even if you've set the font/font size to the default, it will still overrule a rule. So my rules were working for headings without subs, I just couldn't see it.
