The spreadsheet and the word processor became caught on and became standardized because they are basic business tools. A word processor isn’t necessarily the best tool for dealing with words, and certainly whole disciplines deal with numbers without using speadsheets. (If anything reminds me of the stultifying boredom of high school, it is work with spreadsheets.) But in business, it’s necessary to write many letters and reports. To calculate profits, there’s no way around adding up numbers.
The outlining applications that seem to be prospering these days have made inroads as business collaboration and presentation tools, namely the mind mappers. The traditional outliner that seems to be faring best commercially is produced for attorneys, half professionals but half businessmen.
