I agree with Steve C. about why Spreadsheets “caught on” and outliners haven’t. If you’re going to work with numbers, you have to have a spreadsheet, but an outliner is an optional tool, and since it takes extra effort to learn and use, most people don’t.
And, Steve is also right about the bias against “outlining” as it was an awful, boring chore rammed down our throats in school.
I also think the analogy with the diet books are a good one, because any diet will work if you are disciplined, just like most any outliner will work for you if you are disciplined. Sure some will work better than others, but it is a matter of degrees.
