I was discussing this last week with a person who had been instrumental in developing early PC software, especially the spreadsheet, and he said that he felt that “outliners are like diet books”—you keep trying new ones, each a little different from the previous ones, but in the end none of them solve the basic problem (trying to lose weight).
I still have a lot of faith in outliners, but I must admit that over the years I’ve tried: Thinktank, More, something for the TRS-80/100, CaseMap, Microsoft Word’s Outliner, Bonsai, Inspiration, Lotus Agenda, Brain Forest, and maybe a bunch of others I’ve forgotten. Right now I am trying out “Life Balance” (http://www.llamagraphics.com)—I’ll give you a report if it works out!
Note how, by contrast, the spreadsheet, once invented, has been pretty much a stable and recognized must-have tool for all computer users ever since.
Why?
