Stephen - Thanks for the insight. I’m embarassed to admit I’ve not really sat down to think about my work the way you have, but the three-stage process you present here seems right on.
My stage 1 is more chaotic than yours (we probably do different sorts of work). I tend to thrash around vacuuming up any bits and pieces of information which might be useful - print, web, interviews, my own ideas, etc. I have a hard time organizing as I gather.
Stage 2: Put it all in a big pile, digest it, and start outlining. Explore relationships (potentially a keyword activity). Attach excerpts from source stuff to the outline as appropriate. Return to stage 1 if needed.
Stage 3: Write.
I too would prefer one major tool per stage. Haven’t found the holy grails yet.
