[ A concept map really is not a graphical outline. Outlines deal in hierarchies, and concept maps graph relations that are not necessarily hierarchical. But to capture these non-hierarchical relations, the connections between the boxes, not just the boxes themselves, must be labeled. ]
Moving towards the concept map direction, I wonder if you know the Cmap Tools developed by IHMC ( http://cmap.ihmc.us/ ). They are free for academic and non-profit use, are relatively straightforward to learn, provide numerous export options (including outlines) etc.
The whole system is Java-based, so requires a relatively fast processor, but I think it’s worth it. The My Cmaps application provides the ability to add “resources” (any kind of files, including other maps) that can then be linked within a map; in addition, when online one may access shared maps from around the globe.
In my office we’ve bought and have been using MindGenius, and I’ve worked with MindManager for some time; after reading your post above I googled around for “Concept Maps” rather than “Mind Maps” and got to IHMC. Now I don’t think that I need anything else (simple outliners aside -I’m using MyBase and KeyNotes).
Thanks for setting me on the right direction!
Cheers
