While we are on the topic of outlining in Word, I am regularly annoyed that the right margin shifts over to the left in the Outlining mode of MS Word. Is there a way to get it back over to the usual place, an inch or so from the right paper margin?

Try this:
In outlining mode, note the name of the style in the box at the left of a toolbar. Open format menu. Choose Styles... In the Styles box, highlight the name of the style and click modify (or new). Make appropriate changes in the format-paragraph screen. No guarantees and you may have to do this for each level.
Afterword, make sure you have the right style showing in the upper left toolbar box.
