2. In GV the item header was just that, a header. Text created “beneath” the header (not subheaders, but actual text that was part of the header but also treated separately) could be viewed in the outline, or hidden in the outline. Also it could be opened within its own text window—that is, it in essence became a separate wordprocessing document. (I apologize if I didn’t explain this concept clearly enough.)

I think NoteMap 2 more or less has this feature. (As I recall, you didn’t upgrade to version 2, and this feature might be new).
In version 2 you can attach comments to any outline heading. They appear as a yellow mark in the gutter. Pass your mouse over a comment mark, and you can see what it contains; double-click, and you can edit the comment. The comment is like a separate document attached to a heading, and printing is optional.
Until today I thought comments a poor substitute for More/GrandView meta-text as commentary didn’t seem editable, other than by deletion and accretion. None of the menus work in a comment, but as I discovered only today, drag and drop is enabled in comment text. This feature is important to me too, and it may enable me to see my way to buying the program.
