I use BrainStorm a lot. It is a fine program if—like me—you prefer working simply with text, as opposed to the visual look of MindManager.
BrainStorm may be the most ingenious of the outliners in how much power it ekes out of a compact program. I would buy it except for its limits on importing and exporting. (I used to buy each and every outliner that appeared on the Mac. On Windows I’ve vowed to make a before purchase.)
Another outliner that has attracted my attention for its simple functionality is called tkoutline. It is entirely free and can be downloaded at
http://tkoutline.sourceforge.net/wiki/
Another nice feature is that it is completely self-contained (no dlls or any other crap to junk up your system), so you can keep it on a thumbdrive and easily take it with you.

I guess its too embryonic for me, in that there is no undo, although the author promises one.
Right now I’m leaning toward ADM. I worry about its prospects though, as I don’t know why people aren’t more enthusiastic about it; its features are incredible, from instant mass registration of documents to multiple hoist. Besides that worry and some trivial reservations about its appearance and its name, I hold back because 1) I use undo a lot when I outline, but ADM doesn’t implement it consistently. Some actions aren’t undoable, or at least I haven’t been able to undo them; and 2)the developer promises tech support to unpaid but registered users, but has not responded to two of my queries.
What exactly is Dave Winer’s tie-in with ADM—anyone know? ADM seems to be part of Dave Winers internet outline project, but neither he nor Userland is credited as a developer. Some kind of alliance or is the relationship stronger than that?
