Being on the Mac, I missed the PC side of the outlining bubble in the 80s, but apparently outlining purists looked to the DOS program MaxThink as we admire More and its cousins today. MaxThink's programmer recently updated it for Windows. It sounds promising.

Steve,

You sent me an email via this forum. Your return address is invalid. Here is my reply:

As far as I know all the messages can be accessed via www.outliners.com/discuss. I don't believe there is an index. However, you can try Google advanced to limit searches to this site and search for a specific term or phrase.

RE MaxThink:

The DOS version was excellent. The last time I looked at the Windows version (many months ago), its commend structure seemed to me to be too different from the Windows standards.

Having just received my Dell computer a couple of days ago, I rushed to try the outliners running on Windows XP. Here are some impressions:

1. MaxThink: Unconventional interface. I like it so far, but there's almost no documentation yet to help me figure it out. I hope Neil can provide some help.

2. NoteMap: Polished program, but few innovations and a surprising 9-level limit on outline levels.

3. Microsoft OneNote: I'm still downloading the trial copy, 80 MB worth. Despite the size of the program, the online descriptions don't show a plethora of features.
