Steve Z,
Tried to send you the following directly, but it bounced back.
Like you, I’ve searched for the perfect PIM, but no luck.
Nothing even of the level of GrandView. More on this below.
Would you mind telling me why you found Whizfolders
a bit overwhelming? Was it the number of folders or is it
the mentioned “routine,” or the way Whizfolders handles
files or folders.? With the work I do & interests I
have, I’ve managed to accumulate about 1,600 folders of
files, at least one of which has 1,200+ files. To deal
with these I use a non-indexing search routine called
Searchopia (http://www.sunrizen.com).
I have pretty much tried the PIMs you mentioned. I bought
Zoot before ver 4 was quite out and waited quite a while
for v4 to appear. Because I sometimes need to save
mathematical/statistical material I found it unsuitable. Its
strengths are reminiscent of Agenda and GrandView’s
categories/assignments which I made much use of, (GV’s not
Agenda’s) but I really need full rtf.
I tried InfoSelect, but it, too, is not fully rtf. I did
like the feature that allows one to save material in
separate, true Windows folders which can be opended
separately from the entire InfoSelect tree. (I don’t like
to keep too much info in one folder for fear of it becoming
corrupted and the consequent loss of much info.)
I probably looked at Personal Knowbase, but long ago.
I think Literary Machine Pro now will accept graphics and
I think it is still on sale for $20 (for that, I bought it),
but does seem to have a steep learning curve and I don’t
think it’s fully rtf.
Nuts? Hardly. In addition to MyBase, I use Inspiration
(it’s the best of the Windows bunch for converting GV files)
and sometimes the diagramming is very useful. My main,
current info repository is now Jot+ ver 3 (http://www.kingstairs.com).
Ver 2.x could not save graphics, so for those I used
Maple Pro (http://www.crystaloffice.com) and WinOrganizer/
Golden Section Notes (http://www.tgslabs.com). Now that Jot+ can
handle graphics, I probably will drop the last two, although
they have some useful features. I also have TreePad
Business, but I’ve mixed emotions about it.
So you see, I appear to be more “nuts” than you!
Hope to hear back.
PIMmingly yours,
-Steve Cohen
