Steve C.,
I’m almost embarassed to answer your question—for reasons you’ll see and maybe relate to. I do use Whizfolders, but not as much as I thought I would. The latest version (5.1) is a nice improvement over previous versions (hierarchical organization of topics; cleaner, XP standard interface). The way it works is that it allows you to set up “folders” for various documents—so, for instance, you might set up a folder for a specific writing project. Pretty soon, though, you end up with a lot of folders, and it gets a bit overwhelming, as the program runs through a little routine whenever you open or close it. As a writing environment, it isn’t bad, though I find that The Journal (http://www.davidrm.com/thejournal/) provides virtually the same features, but without being so overwhelming, which is why I don’t use Whizfolders as much as I had anticipated.
Now, to answer your question about what PIM I use instead (this is the embarassing part). I use several different programs, depending upon the need—because no one has made the perfect program. Mostly I use Zoot. Zoot is good for sucking in text-based information, but it isn’t a good environment for writing and it doesn’t support RTF formatting. Like you, I also use MyBase for storing web pages—which, as you know, it excels at. Other programs that I own and use to some extent include (gulp!):
InfoSelect (not a great writing environment, and soon gets overwhelming with a lot of information)
Personal Knowbase (uses keywords to index entries, somewhat primitive interface, not a great editor, but has some promise with continued improvements)
Literary Machine (oddball program that provides all sorts of ways to link your information, but is quite quirky; provides only plain text storage)
Maybe I’ll end the list here, before you think I’m nuts. There are others, but these are the main ones I use. Well, then there’s Outlook for addresses and my calendar.
I’m on a quest for the perfect PIM, so I am always glad to hear about other’s suggestions.
