Steve, I realize that starting participation in a discussion group with a pissed off message substracts credibility from my messages. My apologies for that, blame it in circumstances, and now let me clarify a few things about the incident:
1. I was in the process of evaluating the latest version of MyBase available as of today (V. 4.81) for purchase. Downloaded the software about a week ago, and started using it until I could develop an opinon. The fact that I hadn’t paid yet is accidental. I pay for EVERY piece of software I use, and thus I would like to avoid the ‘free ride’ stigma.
2. Up to the moment of the problem, things were going relatively well WITH THE HTML PlugIn. I agree with you, the ability to snapshot WEB pages is great. handy and fast. But let’s not put the cart in front. MyBase is an outliner, with an HTML capture plugin (at least, that is the way it is presented and advertised). The problems I had occurred while using the outliner.
3. Strong feelings? Absolutely. Otherwise I wouldn’t have written. Sure, I hadn’t yet gotten to the point of inflexion with the software, in which I make it part of my every day toolbox, but I had already invested a lot of precious time on it. I had some minor FUNCTIONAL problems, and I had even started reporting them to the author. That’s OK, we all have bugs in our software.
But the software started having what are symptomatically signs of poor development: memory exceptions. No gracious recovery possible: the application dies in front of you, you see what you typed last, wish you could save, but you can’t even shut down the application. Happened once, and I should have heeded… but the optimist in me took me to continue… going once, going twice… and my file was corrupted… no third chance.
Sorry that you recommended the plugin, and sorry to rain in a happy parade. But I believed that I could save somebody else the pain I went through when I saw four days of personal effort (plus learning) evaporate in front of my eyes. Unfortunately, I believe people in this list are, like I am, starving for a great outliner thay can use like I used to use More 3.1—I just wanted them to know that MyBase is not a susbtitute (in four years of using More, I don’t think I ever got a file corruption, even when applications were pretty buggy those days).
Best wishes
Carlos Caballero
