About 8 months ago now I moved from a Mac (OS 9.2) to an Intel box running Linux. God, I miss MORE. So I’ve been investigating some alternatives. I’ve found three, following the two pane model (outline on the left, text “leaf” on the right).
The newest is the latest version of Tuxcards - 1.0. http://www.tuxcards.de. It’s Linux based, Open Source, saves to XML, exports to HTML. In the current version, the author added word count, drag and drop outline editing, and more. Already had drag and drop text editing. A very cool cactus growing program is included. It uses various Qt libraries to work.
The second is something called Gjots. http://bhepple.freeshell.org/gjots—also Linux, Open Source, with some primitive but effective outline editing tools on the left. The right feels very vi-like.Not quite as pretty as tuxcards, and I had some trouble with fonts, but the author is very likable and responsive. This is more gnome-ified.
The third is TreePad Lite, which just released a version for Linux. http://www.treepad.com/
I expected it to be the most polished, but I found it pretty stripped down (it is a “lite,” i.e. free version), and a little odd in the outline editing side.
None of them have anywhere near the power of MORE, unfortunately. But they speak XML, and speak to the persistent utility of outlining.
