New Item (as in New Topic?) is just a carriage return.
This is one of the semi-frustrating differences between AW 6 in OS 9 and OS X. In 9, AW retains the macro facility, it is absent in X. With AW 6 in 9, you can create a macro and assign it to a function key to expand and collapse topics. Double clicking on the topic does the same thing, so you don’t have to go to the menu bar.
I know some folks don’t like “work-arounds” but QuickKeys X may offer some facility to manipulate the menu bar in X that would give you the same functionality. I don’t have have QuickKeys, so I’m not positive. You might look at YoupiKey as well, looks like the same thing, only free.
While you’re at it, you might want to check this out. Quartz rendering in AW 6! I haven’t tried it yet, so I’m not sure how well it works. Comments look promising, but they’re mostly focusing on IE 5 and Mozilla.
Update: I installed YoupiKey and managed to create two macros to expand and collapse outline topics. It’s a little tricky to figure out, but if you read the help files, you’ll get it. I created keyboard equivalents with no problem. I’d say the only downside is you have to see the menu open and close, but it’s pretty fast so it shouldn’t be too much of a distraction.
I also installed Silk and AW text looks as good as any Cocoa application. You have to go into the preferences and enable Fractional Character Widths to get the cursor to track properly, but so far it looks great.
