For Mac OS X users, the new OmniOutliner 2 supports multiple columns. Version 1 did as well, but they were more of a nuisance than helpful. Version 2 has a few column data types (duration, date, plain and rich text, checkbox (separate from the main checkbox on the outline column), number, and pop-up list), and it has let me bring my old DOING/DONE! outline back to life in the most useful way yet (tracking when tasks are due, and then how long it took to do them).
If two outlines have a similar structure (ie - item and due date), dragging and dropping parts of one outline to the other maintain the column data.
Now if only I could find my key for BrainForest and rescue all my old outlines…
