I’ve looked at AO at various times but was not impressed.

If you don’t need graphics, look at Jot+ at http://www.kingstairs.com
Otherwise, look at Treepad Plus at http://www.treepad.com or Maple or Maple Pro at http://www.crystaloffice.com.

There are quite a few similar ones, but the TreePad & Maple seem to be the ones with the most frequent updates at the moment. On any of these, development is sporadic. There may be a flurry of development followed by months of nothing new, or even discontinuance.

InfoSelect at http://www.miclog.com is perhaps the one with the longest history.
