I’ve found the solution. Hopefully this may help others.
First, here was the original problem: After unstuffing the MORE 3.1 archive and then running the installer, I ended up with these inexplicable bulleted-named files described in an earlier posting here. Other readers apparently didn’t know what I was referencing since they didn’t end up with these files after running the installer. (If installation goes well, what is supposed to happen is that the installer program converts the bulleted files into files MORE needs. Unfortunately, not in my case.)
Now here was the solution: I have several hard drive partitions, one of which remains the original HFS rather than HFS+. I copied the three installation folders from the HFS+ main partition to the regular HFS partition and ran the installation program from there. Voila, no problem.
Very strange, and clearly this problem isn’t impacting most people. Just for the record, I’m running a PowerMac 6400 with System 8.6. If someone didn’t have a regular HFS partition, the solution would be to install from floppies. Again, I hope this helps someone, and thanks again to Dave (especially), Userland, and Symantec for making MORE available again!
