My methods are roughly similar to those of Mr. Vulich. I like single pane outliners (currently Inspiration) for creating a skeleton for writing. I also like a mixed outliner/database for organizing information - i.e., first and foremost as an aid to my OWN understanding of the subject at hand. In my case, though, I use a THREE-pane program: Zoot. It is not usually classified as an outliner, but you can make a respectable, hierarchically-tiered
outline in pane #1 (with Pane #2 featuring topic headings and Pane #3 displaying notes/raw text.) Zoot is a very powerful program with awesome text searching, filtering, and rules-based auto-categorizing. Finally (going backward in the info gathering process) I use Asksam as my basic data dump with Enfish TrackerPro
as an occasional adjunct for text information located elsewhere on my hard drive. Other folks I know prefer to use dtSearch for this function.
