I think Inspiration handles large amounts of information rather well. Have you tried the “family/children” capabilities? Also, of course, is the ability to have many paragraphs of text associated with a node.

The non-hierarchal network junkies should look at “The Brain” (http://www.natrificial.com). Unfortunately it has no capability to place a direction on a link.
