Journaling, a simplistic view 7/21/2018
DEVONthink has NO proprietary formats for documents. That seems to be an persistent urban legend. Files are stored in DEVONthink as their original files and are never transformed by anyone other tha...
Other websites for CRIMPing related discussion? 7/21/2018
This thread alone has caused multiple weekends lost to CRIMPing all around the world. https://talk.macpowerusers.com/t/whats-your-favorite-app-that-even-apple-power-users-dont-know-about-but-should/5...
Other websites for CRIMPing related discussion? 7/21/2018
A lot of the Productivity Guild postings are behind a rather expensive paywall. A site, related to the Mac Power Users podcast, is https://talk.macpowerusers.com There's a broad range of users and ...
MacJournal 7/20/2018
Well, that's something. Thank you for following up, Steve. Depending on one's frame of reference, the next ice age will be in the "near future". But, hope springs eternal. Stephen Zeoli wrote: Ju...
Writer's log 7/18/2018
As Steve mentioned, the iOS app is there. From reading the drift in Agenda's forum, I doubt dynamic variables will show up any time soon -- but I believe markdown tables are on the horizon. (Agend...
Writer's log 7/18/2018
Developers Charles Parnot (Findings) and Drew McCormack (Agenda) have discussed their collaboration in their respective forums. I understand there is some shared code in the two apps. Stephen Zeoli...
Writer's log 7/18/2018
Perhaps Agenda would serve well as a writer's log? Entries can be grouped in categories and projects, linked to calendars and dates, linked to other entries, tagged, assigned to "persons" (i.e., any...
Writer's log 7/16/2018
I do not. Though I write quite a bit, most of it is for clients and is on case. Amount written is not a meaningful metric for me. However, I know Ulysses has interesting widgets for tracking writi...
TheBrain 9 is out of beta 7/15/2018
I also miss this -- and the ability in v8 to index a folder from the file system and have TheBrain create a thought for each of the documents in that folder. I spoof the note-in-a-window feature by ...
Any Known Alternatives to DEVONthink for Linux or Windows? 7/14/2018
As with anything to do with "metadata" -- it depends. Including the definition of "metadata". The way Windows or macOS handles tags varies, and the way third party software on those platforms reco...
Any Known Alternatives to DEVONthink for Linux or Windows? 7/14/2018
Finder searches are far more adaptable and configurable than any DEVONthink search Tembo for quick on-the-fly searching Ammonite for tag searching Apple Notes or Curiota for on-the-fly note taking For...
Any Known Alternatives to DEVONthink for Linux or Windows? 7/13/2018
I agree. Absolutely. DEVONthink is good but not essential. (I say this after once being a very active user, with close to 7,000 posts in their forums, and contributing hundreds of scripts to enhan...
What is "ugly" software? 7/12/2018
I'm somewhat on a different plane with regard to DEVONthink -- the UI is utilitarian but since I use have the app open and actively use it 8 - 10 hrs / day, I find the majority of those visible contro...
What is "ugly" software? 7/11/2018
I see comments here and there in this forum and -- sometimes mild, sometimes very stern -- in the vein "this software is so ugly I cannot / refuse / have a hard time using it". I'm a sucker for nice ...
improvements to the forum 7/10/2018
That's great news, Chris. And thank you for providing the forum, maintaining, and moderating it. It's a great asset for the community you've created, The only suggestion is let me edit my stuff. ...
MacJournal 7/9/2018
If there's fear of anyone tracking anything, then Little Snitch or similar is a good idea. Using Snitch, I've never noticed anything untoward about MJ. I've used MacJournal steadily for over a deca...

Which "favorite" outliner app would you give up if something better came along 7/8/2018
I use OO5 because I need the custom columns, and for things that need to be exported with styling (as mentioned by Steve -- very nice example he posted, by the way). Of course Word or Pages can do t...
Which "favorite" outliner app would you give up if something better came along 7/7/2018
Sorry, long topic title. I was thinking about which of my "favorite" outliner apps I would give up if something better came along. Unfortunately "favorite" doesn't necessarily mean good or great, ...
MacJournal 7/7/2018
BTW, WiFi sync does not always work on mesh networks. I find it is more reliable to create a network on my laptop, connect the iPad to that network, and then sync MJ on both machines.
MacJournal 7/7/2018
Entry templates are in my top 5 MacJournal goodies list. I use these for daybook entries and other categories. Dellu's spot on about the hidden preferences -- I doubt there is much consumer softwar...
MacJournal 7/6/2018
Welcome to MacJournal, Bill. I agree with everything you wrote. Though I am still concerned that there seems to have been silence from Dan since 2 years ago. (Maybe he started a new blog some pl...
Favored "bucket" app - DEVONthink v. Keep-It vs. EagleFiler etc 7/5/2018
I'm not a fan of the "bucket app" idea. We all have a terrific "bucket app" by default -- the file system. I'd suggest the problem should be approached from the needs perspective -- what are your ...
Edit on iOS -- does one thing and does it right 7/5/2018
Yes. Definitely wasn't a good idea to post a recommendation for something I like and use without first consulting those who know better. Now I know! Many thanks for setting me straight.
