I think I may have just found the Holy Grail (OK, a part of it). Just bought iThoughtsHD, a mindmapping app on the iPad, so that I can plan out a major project (by doing a “work breakdown structure”, to use project management slang). It did that beautifully (just like it shows on this video:

However, the real killer feature for me was that with a few easy finger taps I was able to export it as an OPML file straight into CarbonFin Outliner on the iPad, turning the visual mindmap into a textual outline. In CarbonFin then I can choose to turn it into a to-do list or a text outline and export it further as a text file.
Besides OPML, iThoughtsHD has a huge range of other export options, such as PDF, image (.png) + HTML, Outlook Tasks and a range (10) of mindmapping file formats such as XMind etc. I’m very impressed.

P.S. I think my main point is that it was a real pleasure to accomplish a daunting task with it, something I’ve been putting away because I didn’t know quite how to begin to tackle it (as it’s a massive and complex 5-month project that’s weighing on me). This is why I CRIMP!
